Fix folder order in Windows "Save As" dialog

Finally!

For years, I have suffered through having to rearrange the file order every. single. time. I save a file to my hard drive.  This happens to you, too, when you find a pretty picture on the internet that you like so much that you want to save it to your C: drive, and it takes you no fewer than forty-five seconds to navigate to the folder you've chosen as the picture's final resting place.

I guess I always assumed that each program had a different way of deciding how to arrange the "Save As" folders, but it's actually standardly fucked up across Windows, save for a few programs like Microsoft Word, which have their own mysterious way of controlling the dialog box.

This is how the dialog box appears by default, except that mine looks even worse because my folders always show up in some random order that has absolutely no relationship with any objective concept of organization, much less a recognizable alphabet.

Only God knows how many minutes (hours? days?) I've wasted rearranging that stupid box to get my files where I want them before today, when I managed to slap together a decent enough Google search that I found not only a sympathizer, but a solution.

The solution link looks scary, but that's because Germans are weird.*  If you scroll half-way down the page to the FileOpenPatcher section (because Germans aren't happy unless it's all one word), you'll find two little links under the German/English flags to download a "patch."  That "patch" solved the problem for me.  I just finished rebooting a few minutes ago, but it works in Google Chrome, which is where most of my saving originates.

Now, instead of being in some random order, the folders are set out in detail view and arranged alphabetically. You can even specify how big you want the box to be.

If it's dorky to be as excited about this discovery as I am, then paint a motherfucking pocket protector on my blouse, because I'm excited!

In case you're having a hard time following, the solution is half-way down this page - http://www.netcult.ch/elmue/ElmueSoft-en.htm

Rejoice!

* - In my opinion, Germans are second only to Austrians among civilized Western societies in terms of their overall weirdness. If we're counting uncivilized Western societies, you can throw the Haitians in there, too.

Loving the new Google Maps for BlackBerry

The layers feature makes it easy to check traffic without having to do a bunch of fumbling around while you're driving.

You can also look shit up on Wikipedia.  This could potentially spare you from having to honor your grandfather's next request to stop at a lame historical marker.

Overall, pretty fawesome update.

p.s. You know you can watch live tv on your BlackBerry, right? http://www.vuivision.com. No joke.

Tip: Upload Facebook pics straight from the web

Did you know you don't have to download pictures to your desktop before you upload them to Facebook?  I didn't, either, because they don't explicitly give you the option of uploading an image from the web.  Doesn't mean you can't!

Step One - Find the picture you want to upload, right click on it, and select "Copy image URL."  Depending on your browser, this might say something else, like "Copy Image Location."  If you can't figure out which one it is, try one, paste it in the address bar of your browser, and keep at it until you get something ending in .jpg, .png, or .gif.

Step Two - Log in to Facebook and start creating your post.  When you want to insert your image, click on "Choose File," and then just paste that link you copied into the first blank you see.  It doesn't matter what directory pops up after you hit the "Choose File" button.  Santa Claus will figure it out and deliver your image to Facebook, just like he promised he would when you were four.

Fawesome, right?

Random song, apropos of almost nothing.

Um, I think I'm now a suspect in the Heights arson investigation

I was just sitting at home, geeking out as usual. Actually, I was posting a photo of me being a geek. Then, The Twitter began to light up with reports of an arson, so...on my bike I rode!

When I got there, a cute cameraman from a local station gave me a little skinny. (Trust that I would have preferred the thick.) The fire was supposedly set while arson investigators were meeting at the fire station on Yale at 12th. It was an old, abandoned shotgun, and the fire was started in the back of the house. I am told that no evidence of fire was visible from the front, but I didn't get close enough to see that myself.

Friendly, but unhot, arson investigators took down my stats, which I would like to think makes me an official suspect in the investigation. Why that excites me, I don't know. Prolly has something to do with being a geek.

Anyway, I gave them a few tips, because I obviously think I know how to do their jobs better than they do. (If you read this officers, this is a joke. Keep reading. I make dumb jokes like this all the time.)

So, there's that.
